Visitor research and evaluation for Brixton Windmill
Brixton Windmill is a much-loved landmark and community hub in Lambeth. With support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Friends of Windmill Gardens set out to widen participation, strengthen volunteering, and build new links with underrepresented groups between 2022 and 2025

Live Projects was commissioned to evaluate the programme. Our approach centred on fieldwork at the Windmill: surveys, vox pop interviews at open days, on-site observation and filming, a training session in evaluation methods, and in-depth interviews with partners, collaborators and staff. This created a rounded picture of how people experienced the Windmill – from leading tours and milling and baking to joining wellbeing and community sessions in the gardens. The evaluation showed a flourishing community offer. Volunteering expanded across milling, baking, tours and the café, with new training opportunities and stronger connections across generations.
